SOMIE INSTANT TRANSLATION EARBUDS (IN PROGRESS)
Language is a core part of who we are as humans, yet it could also be a huge barrier that prevents us from fully interacting with each other - specifically with our family members, significant others, and significant other's family members. Somie bridges that gap, bringing families together and allowing them to communicate freely.
For my brand and packaging class at WWU during 2018 Spring Quarter, I was tasked to create a product brand for a specific niche with a need that isn't currently being met. I was fascinated by emerging instant translation technology, such as the Pilot Translating Earpiece, and realized that none of these products were branded for families. Seeing as how there are so many families who have come from other countries and are now raising their children in America, the language barrier becomes more and more apparent. This barrier is also prevalent within interracial relationships and marriages. I wanted my brand to remedy that.
I wanted the name to sound inviting and have a deeper meaning behind it. In my exploration, I tried combining different words and phrases, and searched for words in different languages with meanings such as sound, language, talk, friend, family, and love. I ultimately decided on the lockup that suited the brand most - combining the Portuguese word "Som" (meaning sound) with the French word "Amie" (meaning friend).
